Personality:
New Jersey prefers to get things across as bluntly as possible in order to create little trouble for himself. However that seems to have the opposite effect most of times. His desire to cut to the chase makes him come off as standoffish and rude to most people. Jersey doesn't see any problem in letting you know what his opinion is whatever it pertains to. Most would certainly qualify him to be someone to avoid so they won't have to deal with his uncaring attitude. This doesn't irk him as much since it means that he won't be bothered unless necessary.
However despite that glaring point in his nature, Jersey is more than capable of being social when it feels necessary. The uncaring is his usual default but he does care about those he's willing to consider as friends. Yet those are few. Those that pass the test will see a man who can be easily flustered at his own failings. That and also his affinity to being bribed with junk food.
Though everyone is capable of seeing him lose his temper. The flare ups are always short lived but he will hold a grudge if the offense calls for it. Most of the time he will merely question your choice of actions and if you had actual put thought into things.
Never fully trusting anyone is a major downside for him. He knows that people aren't always trustworthy or good-willed so he's cautious and hesitant to let people in. He usually makes point to take note of other people's flaws. If anything, it's to make sure they don't cost him a blunder let alone fall to their own stupidity.Keeping a distance reflects not only in the way he thinks at times but also permeates the way he works. Though Jersey can and will get up close and personal.
Background:
The man to become New Jersey started out as a kid growing up on the colony of Tribute. Belonging to a family with two older siblings, he was usually considered the less fortunate yet tenacious of the three children. His parents were separated and passed around the kids between each other every month or so. His siblings were praised more while he lived out in their shadows.
This caused some resentment from the young Derek. He wanted to prove that he wasn't a downgraded version of his siblings. let alone that as well as being worthy of staying put rather than carted off every which way. So he learned how to take care of himself with little assistance from them all. It at least helped him not feel as useless.
It wasn't until he was eighteen did he find what he hoped would be the chance to prove himself. Derek joined the Army and excelled as a soldier. He felt accomplished at his good eye for targeting and steady trigger finger. However it didn't win over his parents as his siblings had gone off to be better things than "playing soldier all day". So he continued his service and cut ties with his family.
Completing his service, Derek decided to take on something more dangerous than the Army. He used his knack for long distance weaponry and other skills to apply them towards being a mercenary. It seemed to work for him and at least he was being paid better. However he couldn't stay on his homeworld after countless numbers of close calls with law enforcement. That and getting word that his family thought him dead.
He soon found himself on the planet of Adaptive. There was plenty of work in the cities especially for someone that didn't care about how much damage needed to be done to accomplish orders. He picked up the moniker New Jersey and settled into the new scenery. The cityscape reminding him of his industrial home-world.
Later on, he was approached by an employer offering him a long -term contract that had more pros than cons as well as a team to rely on. Jersey had nothing else to lose so he accepted the terms. And that was the start of the Deadeye.
Sample:
“Message has been sent to his helmet. Meet me in the alley three streets over. Don’t stop.”
Off in the distance, New Jersey picks up the spent shell. The sniper rifle resting in his hands as he remained crouched. He then rolled back onto his feet and strode towards the edge of the rooftop. A glare fixated on the club. The man inside had done his job.
So why the hell was the idiot not moving?
He scowled as the man still refused to budge. “It’s a non-lethal hit. You need to start moving.”
This guy was now involved in this. Jersey wasn’t enthusiastic. Why did he have to be the one to fix this mess? Let alone have to deal with this nosy client? Complainants of using people already echoed in his mind.
At least he was going to do what his partner would do. Protect the man and his son. They would be a reminder to definitely not let clients get involved with jobs though. Not after this. Even if he did use the man as bait and it worked.
“Hey, get out of there.” He ordered roughly. “I can’t protect you if you start going stupid on me. Move."
